Brooklyn Conservatory of Music

Brooklyn, NY | 12,000 SF | Anticipated 2026

  • PBDW has worked with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music since 2019 on strategic planning and expansion studies for their facilities in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  Since 1945, the Conservatory has been housed in a c.1890 mansion, a unique and intimate setting that has become the heart of the institution and its identity.  During its evolution to providing citywide programs and the largest music therapy program in NYC, BKCM’s need for space in Park Slope grew beyond the confines of “the house,” with an expanded mission to support a growing number of individuals with disabilities.

PBDW’s engagement began with a discovery phase that included surveys, interviews, retreats and observation of the Conservatory’s activities and events, through which we learned about its operations, culture and critical needs.  This allowed us to develop expansion plans that optimized functions in the mansion while increasing the number of studios and introducing new community gathering spaces.  Ultimately, the concept of a satellite campus in the same neighborhood emerged as the most effective way to address the Conservatory’s urgent space needs while preserving the character of their historic home.

Through this process, we supported multiple applications to help the Conservatory secure funding and grants from both government and private sources.  We understood from the beginning that the Conservatory was taking a long view of their future space needs, and we remain a partner as they adjust to their evolving campus and refine their vision for the mansion.
