gould memorial library

Bronx, NY | 10,000 SF | 2001

  • The Bronx Community College Auditorium is the former chapel of Stanford White’s 1900 Gould Memorial Library. The Chapel became an Auditorium when Bronx Community College facilities grew. The scope of the renovation included the restoration of the 1,100-seat auditorium to its original appearance and the provision of new mechanical systems suitable for theatrical and other performances.

A new metal and glass oculus light fixture simulates the natural light that originally came through a glass floor in the library above. Non-original partitions enclosing the balcony were removed and the balcony was restored to its original configuration. Two new egress doors added at the rear of the building allow for full occupancy of the balcony. Wood windows around the perimeter of the Auditorium were restored, allowing light for the first time since the blackout of the Second World War. Finally, a multi-color paint scheme simplified from the original design highlights the architecture, including the stenciled Greek key at the dome panels.
