Our design creates a fresh new vocabulary for the Hill Campus athletic facilities, revitalizing the existing athletic center and setting up a dialogue between the athletic center, the new aquatic center, and the adjacent athletic field.
PBDW’s work on Riverdale Country School’s Hill Campus includes a major interior renovation and new façade for the existing Marc A. Zambetti Athletic Center, and the design of a new aquatic center on an adjacent site. Our design approach creates an architectural dialogue between the two buildings, unifying the expression of the athletic facilities and solidifying their presence on the hillside overlooking the Frank J. Bertino Memorial Field.
The new aquatic center is perched high atop a wooded bluff overlooking Bertino Field. It houses a state-of-the-art, 6-lane competition swimming pool, locker rooms and spectator viewing areas. The lobby and pool spaces are set behind a tall ribbon of north-facing glass, showcasing the adjacent treetops and hillside, and reinforcing the building’s connection to RCS’ other athletic facilities beyond.
Our design for the Zambetti building’s Varsity Gym modernizes its athletic amenities while integrating new facilities for school-wide assemblies. A new training gym replaces the school’s current pool and provides much-needed athletic practice space. PBDW designed a new elevator, stair connections and renovated lobbies that will improve the experience of navigating between the building’s principal spaces. At the top-floor Student Center entrance, our design for a dynamic glass-walled meeting space will heighten the experience of arrival while expressing the school’s commitment to excellence.
